The story takes place in a place called AmberGround. The land has no natural sun and instead has a small man-made sun that hovers above a set location. AmberGround is split into three lands each separated by ring shaped lakes. The center and capital, Akasuki, is directly above the man-made sun and is where the wealthier class live. The middle land, Yuusari, is where the middle class reside but due to it's distance from the man-made sun it is in perpetual twilight. The farthest land is Yodaka where the poor live. At best the light in Yodaka is about that a full moon if that. Despite all this darkness plants seem to grow just fine.

Towns are spaced out in Yodaka and Yuusari and travel between towns is limited. This is because of giant metallic incests called Gaichuu roam the land. They normally reside in dark places where the sunlight can't reach like mountains, valleys, and forests however they are also know to move there territory into inter-town pathways. They are attracted and consume “heart” or emotion stored in inanimate object and people. When they find prey they send out large golden tentacles to constrict the unfortunate victim. If the object is inanimate the damage to range from simply removing the words of the object (if the object is a book or letter) to turning it into dust. If they grab something living they will absorb the memories and emotions of the victim. Once that is done they release them. The victim will keep breathing and have there eyes open but they will not move, speak, or eat. They just lay there and starve to death.

Gaichuu's armored exoskeleton is imperious to bullets and weapons. Even if they were able to pierce or decapitate the armor (and that's a big if) the Gaichuu is still alive and can easily repair itself. The only way to kill one is to use a “Spirit Amber” enforced weapon. Spirit Amber are small incests trapped in colored resin. One example from the series is a bee inside a red resin. The Spirit Amber enhances a person's “heart” and forms it into a weapon. If shot or pierced into a Gaichuu's armor (all Gaichuu have gaps or weak spots that are better to shot at) they explode and die (yay). However if a person uses a Spirit Amber to much without rest they will suffer the same fate as being eaten by a Gaichuu (which is to be in a coma till you die)

With lack of electricity and the dangerous terrain the only form of communication between towns is by letter. Mail carriers often nicknamed Letter Bee's for the bee like emblem on there clothes are responsible to carry the letter through despite Gaichuu (and some times letter Marauders). Their base is in Yuusari the middle class area. Along with a Spirit Amber Weapon Letter Bee's will often have a partner (nicknamed Dingos). These partners are sometimes animals like dogs or panthers. Other times they can be human mercenary that get paid off. The Dingo will often severe as a decoy while the Letter Bee can aim at the Gaichuu.

Physical Description Long blonde hair, about 5 foot 5 inches. She wears the stranded Letter Bee uniform consisting of a blue hat, shirt, and pants with the bee symbol on the all of them.
History: Her parents left her when they got promoted to live in Akatsuki since you can't bring family members with you when your promoted. This left her with only her big brother to watch and take care of her. However one day a Gaichuu consumed him leaving her all by herself. To carry out his memories she worked hard and became a Letter Bee.

Physical Description Black hair, with neko ears on top, about 5 foot. She normal has dark clothes and and doesn't have a tail.
History: Her mother was a government experiment in Akatsuki but ran away to Yodaka when they were though and wanted to kill her. Nekami was born though neither her mother or herself knew the father. One day when she was 7 her mother just disappeared without leaving a trace of where she could of gone. Nekami has been leaving by herself stealing food and leaving in alleyways.

History: Not much is know about Ken, he doesn't really know himself. All he does know is that he despises the government for the unfair class system and gets back on them by stealing stamps and selling them off.
